The chills you get from music have a proper scientific term — frisson, a French word meaning "aesthetic chills." It describes the goosebumps, shivers down the spine, and sudden wave of emotion that certain passages of music can produce. It's a real, measurable physiological event, first documented in research from the 1980s and studied extensively since.

Research on frisson prevalence has varied across studies, with estimates ranging from roughly 55% to 86% of the population reporting that they experience music chills with any regularity. That means a meaningful portion of people — potentially close to half — listen to the same songs, sit through the same crescendos, and feel nothing physically unusual at all. The split doesn't correlate with how much someone enjoys music, how emotional they generally are, or how attentive a listener they happen to be.

Your brain releases dopamine

When frisson occurs, the brain releases dopamine — the same neurotransmitter involved in eating food you love, falling for someone, or winning something you worked hard for. A landmark 2011 study using PET and fMRI brain imaging confirmed that dopamine release is greater for pleasurable music than neutral music, and that release levels correlate directly with the intensity of the emotional response. Music reaches into your brain's core reward system and uses the exact same circuitry.

Frisson doesn't happen randomly — it happens at musically specific moments: a sudden key change, a powerful voice entering unexpectedly, an instrument arriving where you didn't expect one, lyrics that precisely describe something you've lived through. Research by Matthew Sachs at Harvard (later highlighted by USC) found that people who experience music chills have a higher volume of nerve fibers connecting their auditory cortex to areas associated with emotional processing. More connections between these regions means faster, stronger communication — and a deeper, more intense emotional response to what they hear. This is a structural difference in the brain, not just a preference or habit.

Sad songs trigger it more than happy ones

Minor chords, slow tempos, and falling melodic lines produce frisson more reliably than upbeat music. One explanation: your brain processes musical sadness in a way that's neurologically similar to real sadness, but in music the perceived emotional "threat" is absent. So your brain allows itself to go deeper into the emotion without activating its usual defenses. The sadness feels safe — and that safety is what lets frisson happen.

Music heard during emotionally significant moments gets stored in the brain alongside the emotions present at the time. Years later, that same song plays — and the stored emotion returns with it, instantly. The medial prefrontal cortex acts as the bridge between the music and the memory, essentially tagging the audio with your personal emotional history. The song is no longer just sound. Psychologists consistently find that people who experience frisson score high on one specific personality trait: openness to experience. This encompasses deep curiosity, strong imagination, a rich inner emotional life, and a genuine engagement with the world. A 2016 study of 100 college students found that openness-to-experience scores predicted frisson frequency — the more open the person, the more often they felt chills from music.

The physical vibration of speakers, the presence of other people experiencing the same music simultaneously, the energy of a crowd — all of these add inputs that reinforce the frisson response.
